Utah trip

Zatanna had her first long car ride. My parents, sister, myself and baby Z went to Utah for my Grandma Anderson's funeral. I was very worried since she has never been in the car longer than an hour that I can think of and here I was taking her on one that lasted 22 hours each way. She did wonderfully! We started on the road at 5 am and she decided after getting her out of bed that she wanted to stay awake and stare out the back window...about 2 hours later she was not a happy little girl (I was even a little scared that something was really wrong, unfortunately she has her mommies trait of her face going all blotchy and red when she cries) but once I gave her a bottle she calmed down and went to sleep and that was the extent of her fussiness the whole way there. She would get her angry voice when she was hungry but no major crying that I remember. 

When we got there she acquired many fans. Especially my cousin Lacey's son Tyler who would rarely leave her if we were nearby. He is learning facial features so he kept poking her eye to say "eye" I was like "hey" but Z just stared unworried other than the slight blink to shield her eye. She didn't like the crowds during the viewing so we spent most of our time out in the hall but during the funeral she was so good. She only made a few ba ba ba's usually during prayers that went a little long. Other than that she played with the program (I don't know if that is what it is called at a funeral) or her elephant.

Adorable

So, I put Zatanna in her jumper tonight so that she could get out some energy. She was over next to the computer maybe three feet give or take from where I was sitting. She ever so slowly jumps her way over to me on the recliner...I look up to see her sitting right in front of me...She was very excited about the whole thing. I am sure now that she knows how to manuever new places we will have to keep an eye on that jumper :) I always wished we could get her a walker but of course they have been declared unsafe for her generation...anyway, who needs one when she can just drag her jumper along with her talk about little but strong legs!

Oh I am praying to see teeth tomorrow she is a little overly irritable. She threw her first actual temper tantrum tonight. She kicked her little legs out did a scream and planted her face right into the ground...I thought that sort of thing was made up...she is only 6 months oh merciful...I will say though it was very easy to remedy the situation. She is generally very sweet except when teeth are trying to pop out. 

The poor thing spent her whole night with her mouth open or chewing on anything she could grab. She would bite on my finger for hours if the pain in my finger and the drool oozing down my arm didn't make me take my finger back for a minute or 20. I am glad I don't have to grow anymore teeth the wisdom ones hurt and I can't remember the baby ones probably for good reason:) Anyway, like I said hoping for teeth tomorrow!! Give the girl at least a little break hopfully...

6 month checkup

Zatanna came in at 26 inches, 16lbs 9oz with a head circumference of 16 1/2. They offered her the flu shot along with the other shots and I said no. I am tired of people just injecting people with stuff just in case. In case she gets that one strand of the flu but as for everything else you are on your own until they develop a new vacccine for the other strands and they put you on a once a day shot in case one of the 500 strands happens your way. She is only 16 lbs how much injected stuff can she deal with at one time. I don't want to find out. I understand that people are cautious but maybe there is a reason kids are allergic to everything today. We aren't all alike people maybe what will help me wont help you. Anyway, I am done ranting now. I still worry about it. I will worry something could happen to her every minute for the rest of my life but sometimes I have to say hey I don't think she needs that and I don't want it and hope that is the right choice. 

She is doing very good today. When she got her shots she was pretty upset. It could have been because I was a bit of a wreck with them yesterday and she was responding more to me then the shots. Other than that the doctor said she looked great.

We started second foods. She had apricots w/mixed fruit yesterday...she was a little eh about them but she has two more days to try them out. I told the doctor we got her juice and she told me that is not something she likes to give them just yet. She said we could do it but to remember it is mostly sugar so to use it as a treat rather than every day. No more than 1-2 ozs a day.  

It was cute when the doctor was using the stethescope, otoscope and whatever else they use she kept trying to steal them from her. It was cute. She tried to bite the stethescope :)

The doctor did also say she heard a little bit of a heart murmur  but that it sounds innocent and since it comes and goes that usually indicates the innocent type so that is good.

almost 6 months

 Zatanna will officially be 6 months on Friday the fourth of Sept.  Her doctors appt is the same day so I am taking off to be there since it is in the afternoon I figure we will celebrate in the morning with some juice and a little 2nd foods (bring on the mixed foods). yum! 

She is definitely teething now. still no little teeths have emerged but she drools more than my moms newfoundland and is biting on everything within reach. I can verify because my father in law (Rick Penny) is a dentist and he could feel one hiding in those gums slowly working its way to the surface. 

She still doesn't usually get three meals worth of solids except sometimes on the weekends. She normally gets at least one or two a day and Daddy has started giving her a little when he is home but we need more consistency. The solids is probably what I find most difficult about not being at home with her.It is harder to get her into a schedule because if she is already crying for food you usually can't get herto stop for anything except formula. She is always happy to grab for mommy and daddy's food though. I may this week institute a mommy daughter dinner where when I eat so does she . The hardest one to figure out is breakfast. I leave at 8am. She gets up at 7:00-7:30am. Obviously she takes a bottle when she wakes since she hasn't eaten in 8 hours or more. eh, we will work it out. Obviously I am not worried about this hurting her development. She clearly likes food and has had all the 1st foods with no allergies. I just think mashed food has got to be better than formula...:)

Anywho, she reaches for everything now. She can't sit anywhere without grabbing something. She usually ends up just pushing it all on the floor but that is ok. When we go to the store which she loves I usually hold her and hand her the shopping list besides having to pick it up once or twice it keeps her pretty preoccupied with scrunching it up and hitting mommy with it :)

I have put her in front of the mirror pretty regularly since she was born and yesterday she just held the mirror and would giggle at it, make faces and try to hug it. It was pretty cute.

One thing I have learned is no matter how my day has gone getting to watch her learn new things is completely amazing. I laugh so hard sometimes and not just the little haha's that all the adults get but truly carefree having fun laughter. I hope I can try to remember how much we all learn every day and to enjoy it as much as Z enjoys learning new things.

I thought recently that the swing we got was going to be of no more use until tonight. She was just squirming and grumpy. I tried all sorts of things that normally work to no avail. I thought I was going to have to put her in her car seat and go somewhere and then I saw that swing and thought "maybe..." and I was right. YAY!!!! She is just chilling in it watching some TV. Now she is rubbing her eyes...I knew she was really tired but she didn't want to give in...there is no denying the power of the swing :)

It is just Too Hot!!

 Z was not having a great day today. She was very grumpy unless sitting on one of her parents laps and grabbing whatever she wanted to throw around or trying to make my hands clap since she can't quite get her own to do it just yet. She studies mine for a long time which is difficult when I want to move on to something new but she still just wants to clap my hands together. A big part of it was that she needed a good nap but wouldn't take one. We are so lucky she sleeps through the night so during the day I am not going to complain if she wants to be up except when she is clearly tired (rubbing her eyes, weepy and just all around grumptastic) Matter of fact I will be the first to admit many times I will walk in her room to see if she is awake during the weekend because I like exploring the world with her but there are some days a girl jsut needs her sleep and today was one of those days. 

This evening we had an engagement party for Zach (bro in law) and his fiance Jessica. I was really excited to go and let everyone see Z and just have a good time. I made this really good fruit salsa (at least I liked it). Well anyway, we got there and she got a little grumpy at first it seemed to just be "where is my mommy" anxiety but soon she was uncontrollably crying to the point where like her mommy she gets hiccupy and shaky. It was horribly sad. We tried to take a walk she would calm down for a second and then start again. Finally, we thought it must be the heat we took her to the car turned on the AC and she was fine a little grumpy for a few seconds but she just sat and watched the AC vents...It was kind of cute. Anywho, Doug took her home since he had already been there cooking for 2 hours before we got there. I stayed until 6:20 and then came home to relieve him of baby duty so he could sleep. When I got home, they were in our bedroom, with the fan on high and she was only in her diaper and just smiling from ear to ear... When Doug got her home he gave her some formula with extra water (she usually doesn't get water but on such a hot day it was necessary) Still my mind worries about all those crazy things water intoxication and whatnot...everyone has to have an issue mine is being in a constant state of worry. Anywho, he also gave her some tylenol just in case and when I got home she was great. 

Speaking of tylenol it was cute the other day I accidentally knicked her fingers between the tray and the high chair (that part was sad not cute) anywho, Doug was pretty sad he runs into the kitchen and says we should give her some tylenol....I was like um...it was just a tiny pinch, no bruising or bleeding I think she will be ok without tylenol. It was pretty cute though I thought I was the one that over reacted :)

Sometimes life happens

Today was a lot of fun actually. It started a little crazy. I woke up all ready for work headed to get the carseat to take Z to grandma Penny's only to realize....there was no car seat it was in my husbands car at Target where he can't answer his phone....Lovely! I called work to let them know I would call when Doug got home somewhere between 12-2pm. I never keep track of what days he works until when because it changes all the time plus it usually doesn't affect me. I sat around for a good hour feeling a little trapped and once I decided life happens it was nice to get to spend time with Z unexpectedly. We turned the TV on mute and we played and sang songs. She had peas and sweet potatoes. I got to do some housework while she took a nap or two. It was a very pleasant day. I called work once Doug got home and I told the boss I would gladly stay home if they don't need me because it is Friday (who really wants to go in for the second half of the day on a Friday if they aren't needed). He told me it wasn't necessary at this point, yea! So, Doug, me and Z watched a little Romeo +Juliet. Doug loves the line "tomorrow you shall find me a grave man" something about puns when you are dying :) I was just shocked he turned it on actually; I love the soundtrack, the movie eh. Then we went to shop n save bought some more fruits and veggies for our eat one new fruit and veggie everyday this month goal. Z loves to go shopping especially now that I carry her around in my arms instead of in the seat (Doug prefers to keep her in the seat as evidenced by me not having a car seat this morning) We bought golden kiwis which are good and not as intense as the green ones, radishes, eggplant and something I can't remember...

Anywho, then tonight I went to my moms as I always do on Friday and we just sort of chilled until Z started to yell at me for being out to late...here i thought i was the mom...:) and now I am home writing this blog and Z is sleeping in her crib with seahorsey.

5 months today!!

She is getting so big! Today she wanted to hold her book on her own. It used to be she would just sort of stare or hit them now you can tell she has a lot more strength. I had an ad and she almost tossed it around like a lasso. She is at the don't read it play with it stage :)

Right now she is in her jumper. She doesn't need extra padding around her anymore to keep her from leaning back and snapping her head around. She also looks for the toys that are hanging now more than the ones within eye shot. PLus she can turn the little seat around all by herself. 

She is getting so good at consonants. We get new ones every day lately it is ma, hmmmm, ba, da. Not to mention all the new tones she is getting in her voice, it is awesome!

Peaches and Sitting on the Couch

Baby Z tried peaches today. She was very "um what in the heck are those" about them. I think they were a little tartier than she wanted but she continued to want them. She likes her new high chair. It is the first time she has had something she could sit upright in and not have us towering over her. As for the other two photos, I thought I would take pics of her sitting on the couch. 

July 26th

 Zatanna is learning new consonants evey minute it seems. She just loves to babble. I know this is normal because of how they cry but it still makes me jump to attention when she cries and it comes out as Ma-Maaaa. Talk about bitter sweet :) 

She can take a few steps if you are holding her a little ways away from you. She is still obviously a little clumsy with it but for four months she is doing amazing. She has been pretty irritable lately I am guessing she has a lot of things on her mind and hates that we lay her down in places she has been a hundred times. She watches everything. 

She has become a lot more of a cuddler too which I find wonderful. My whole life I have needed someone to hug on and now I have someone :) 

As for food, still loving the carrots. We started sweet potatoes yesterday and she ate almost a full jar! Green Beans she does ok for a little bit and prunes it depends on the day. I think there is too much flavor sometimes. Anyway, I think next is squash. Doug said we need to add more to our diet too...Why I am not sure but if there is something he will eat as a side dish bring it on. 

UpperClass Living Party

Zatanna went with me to an Upper Class Living Party tonight at her Great aunt Cheryl's house. I bought a quote to put on her wall. It says Zatanna Practically Perfect in every way. Yep I love that line from Mary Poppins. Anyway, she did so good at the party. She only got fussy for a few minutes and that was hungry time. She did of course make a dirty diaper while we were there luckily it was when everyone was in the other room getting food. The diapers are definitely getting fuller as more solids get introduced. Tonight we also made a run to Walmart because Shop n Save diapers suck. They hold very little and what they do hold does not absorb very well so she was constantly uncomfortable or being changed. It is too bad, they are cute diapers but so far Walmart brand beats them all. I didn't really believe it when all the ladies were telling me that but it is very true. 

Prunes

So yesterday Doug got Zatanna prunes. When we tried them she ate them eagerly but started crying hysterically all of a sudden so I thought maybe she didn't like them so I gave her a bottle and tried again today. She loved it and only got grumpy when she was done with her little bowl. I think she may have just been really hungry last night and not in the mood to wait in between bites.
